LLMs rush to “solve” puzzles, but often the wrong ones. Frame objectives and constraints so its bias works for you, not against you.
Promise: This guide will change how you frame problems for language models. Instead of “asking for an answer,” you’ll learn to stage a puzzle the model can’t misunderstand—so its urge to solve works for you, not against you.
We give LLMs prompts and they give us solutions. That seems simple until you notice a recurring pattern: the model confidently “solves” the wrong thing. You ask for a plan, it gives a pitch. You ask for constraints, it invents them. That’s not malice; it’s momentum. These systems are compulsive puzzle-solvers. When your request is foggy, they grab the nearest shape that fits and sprint to the finish.
The mental move is to assume there’s always an invisible puzzle competition happening inside your prompt. Several interpretations are available. The model will pick the one that’s easiest to complete fluently. Your job is to make the right puzzle the easiest—and the only—one to solve.
Think of an LLM like a speed-chess player with a bias for checkmates that look elegant. It sees patterns, proposes a line, and commits. That bias is helpful when the board is clear and the rules are explicit. It’s risky when the board is crowded with ambiguity.
Let’s name three instincts behind this behavior:
Completion bias: The model prefers to finish a tidy arc over sitting with uncertainty. It would rather present a complete answer than ask what’s missing.
Shortcut bias: It reaches for the closest familiar pattern. “Write a plan” can collapse into “write a persuasive narrative,” because those patterns are nearby in its training.
Overfit bias: Once it locks onto a frame, it amplifies that frame—even if stray details (your constraints) don’t quite fit.
None of these are bugs. They are the reasons LLMs feel quick and helpful. The trick is to aim those biases.
When you prompt, you’re not ordering text—you’re defining the puzzle the model believes it must solve. Framing means deciding, then declaring:
What counts as success (objective),
What pieces are on the table (inputs),
What walls the solution must not cross (constraints),
What shape the result should have (form).
Do that, and you reduce the number of plausible puzzles to one. Do it lightly—this is a mindset, not bureaucracy. A single clarifying sentence can be enough to steer the model’s solver instinct toward the right hill.
💡 Insight: LLMs follow friction. Make the right puzzle low-friction (clear, checkable), and the wrong puzzle high-friction (blocked by explicit “don’ts” or a required check).
Here’s a tiny scene you’ve probably lived.
You ask: “Draft a one-page weekly plan for our product launch.”
What the model returns: A motivational memo about “driving impact this week,” with slogans, not a schedule. It solved a rallying puzzle, not a planning one.
Reframed puzzle: “Create a time-boxed weekly schedule for a product launch. Objective: allocate 40 focused hours. Inputs: existing assets (landing page draft, email list), team of 3. Constraints: no meetings after 14:00, legal review required before any outbound. Form: a table with days (Mon–Fri), time blocks, owner, deliverable. Success: all assets have a named owner and deadline.”
Now the “rally” puzzle is harder to choose. The “schedule” puzzle is the only door left open—and the model’s bias to finish will carry it through that door.
The model predicts what comes next, token by token, guided by probabilities learned from massive text. “Puzzle-solver with bias” is our human-friendly description of two mechanical facts:
It infers intent from context. Loose prompts widen the space of plausible intents; the model will choose a likely one even if it’s not yours.
It optimizes for coherent continuation. Coherence beats correctness when the two collide, unless your prompt makes correctness easier to achieve than a pretty paragraph.
That’s why framing the puzzle changes the output more than adding adjectives ever could.

Use this diagram as a mental calibrator: when you dislike an output, don’t add adjectives—narrow the puzzle set.
A few common scenes:
When you ask for “research” The model may summarize from memory, “solving” a recall puzzle. If you need validation or citations, state that the puzzle is triage and uncertainty, not storytelling.
When you ask for “ideas” You’ll get center-of-the-bell-curve suggestions. That’s the shortcut bias. If you want edges or trade-offs, declare a puzzle about diversity or constraints (“3 safe, 2 weird, 1 contrarian, each with a risk note”).
When you ask for “review” It may praise instead of critique. Completion bias pushes toward harmonious closure. If you need red teams, frame for risk exposure (“List failure modes; no compliments allowed”).
Bias also helps. Completion bias is why checklists are finished. Shortcut bias is why standard forms are crisp. Overfit bias is why a well-worn schema (like a changelog or a brief) snaps into place. Aim those.
⚠️ Pitfall: Adding more content without changing the puzzle just gives the model more room to improvise. One clarifying sentence that narrows the puzzle beats three paragraphs of background.
Use these as gentle templates to steer the solver.
For planning: This prompt frames objective, inputs, constraints, form, and success in one breath. “Plan a five-day content sprint. Objective: publish 3 articles. Inputs: rough notes in {{DOC}}, two writers. Constraints: ≤4 hours/day per writer, each draft must pass a fact check. Form: a table with Day, Task, Owner, Fact-Check Gate. Success: by Friday 16:00, three URLs and checked sources.”
For critique: This prompt shifts the puzzle from praise to fault-finding. “Act as a friendly critic. Objective: surface risks, not compliments. Input: the proposal below. Constraints: no adjectives like ‘great’ or ‘strong.’ Form: a list of 5 risks; each risk has a one-line mitigation. Success: at least one risk addresses feasibility, one addresses ethics.”
For decision support: This prompt prevents persuasive essays by binding the structure to the decision. “Help me decide between Option A and B. Objective: choose one. Inputs: A, B details below. Constraints: treat unknowns as unknowns; do not assume data. Form: a 3-row table: Criterion, A, B; then a one-line verdict citing the strongest criterion. Success: verdict repeats the chosen option and the reason.”
If the model keeps “solving the wrong thing,” try one of these single-sentence nudges:
“If the objective is unclear, ask one clarifying question before solving.”
“Do not narrate; the puzzle is selection, not storytelling.”
“Unknowns must remain unknowns—do not invent data.”
“Fail gracefully: if constraints conflict, stop and describe the conflict.”
These aren’t techniques as much as friction controls. They make the wrong puzzle harder to complete than the right one.
Goal: Feel the solver bias, then fix it.
Step 1 — Give this vague prompt: “Write a customer email announcing our new analytics dashboard.”
Likely output (snippet): “Thrilled to share our powerful new dashboard that unlocks insights…” —It solved a hype puzzle.
Step 2 — Reframe the puzzle in one line: “Objective: write a plain-language email to existing paid users that lists three concrete benefits (load time, export formats, date filters) and one action (try the ‘Compare’ button). Form: 120–150 words, no adjectives like ‘powerful.’ Success: readers know what changed and where to click.”
Expected output (snippet): “Starting today, your analytics dashboard loads in under two seconds. You can export CSV or JSON, and you’ll find new date filters above the chart. To compare two time ranges, click Compare in the top right…”
Notice how a single sentence turned persuasion into specificity. You aimed the puzzle.
Some tasks require more than puzzle framing:
Fresh facts or numbers: You need tool use or retrieval, or you’ll get fluent fiction.
Irreducible ambiguity: When success cannot be stated, expect narrative drift. That’s your cue to tighten the problem or accept exploration.
Safety-critical decisions: A well-framed puzzle can still be wrong with high confidence. Pair framing with verification or a second pass that checks claims.
The mental model still helps here; it just isn’t the whole system. Frame first, then bring the right tools.
A team lead asked for “a crisp launch plan by tomorrow.” The model returned a press release. The lead was frustrated—“It didn’t listen.” We changed one line: “The puzzle is time-boxing work, not announcing it.” Same model, new frame. The output snapped to a calendar with owners and gates. The solver hadn’t been disobedient; it had been efficient on the wrong hill.
LLMs are puzzle-solvers with bias. They love finishing patterns, they grab the nearest familiar frame, and they stick to it. That’s why they feel fast—and why they drift. You can harness that energy by thinking less about “what to say” and more about “what puzzle am I handing over?” Declare objective, inputs, constraints, form, and success in a sentence or two. Make the right puzzle the only easy one.
When an answer disappoints, assume not that the model failed, but that two puzzles were possible and it picked the other one. Your corrective move isn’t “try harder,” it’s “narrow the puzzle set.” With that mindset, the model’s biases stop being bugs and start being propulsion.
In the end, framing is respect: for your goal, for the reader, and for the system you’re steering. Give the solver a clean board and clear rules, and it will move with the speed you hired it for.
